About the company
This role is with a large, successful New Zealand business, with a Nationwide presence in the commercial construction sector. With significant growth over the past 10 years and many loyal, long term people, they are known for ‘doing what they say’, and have a culture built on growing great talent through high levels of trust, giving people responsibility and a focus on teamwork. While they are the size of many corporate companies, they maintain their core family orientated values; there is no hierarchy, everyone is someone, and people are recognised for their contribution.

The role
With the strategic plan in place, now is the time to accelerate and shape the delivery of the strategic initiatives through a newly created role of Chief Operations Officer. While the priorities are clear, there is wide scope to deliver and for you to own this role.  Ideas are encouraged, and your impact and growth in this role is uncapped.

The COO role will:
  • Provide leadership across the business, bringing people together to deliver on the strategic priorities. With a number of Business Units and a range of support teams, your role is to find ways to bring people together, build capability and enable teams to deliver.
  • Drive operational excellence across multiple units, sites and business functions, creating consistency and performance.
  • Own the systems and processes throughout the business. Identify opportunities to improve processes and systems, integrate existing systems, and build business cases for new systems. Drive the implementation of processes and systems to create consistency.
  • Report on business performance, from construction metrics, QA and financial performance, through to H&S, sustainability and people reporting. Utilise that data across functions.

About you
We are looking for a COO who understands how to find the ‘one percenters’ in a business that operates in a complex, dynamic and competitive environment. As such, the experience we are looking for includes:
  • Experience in a COO or similar leadership role, where you have managed multiple sites and business units
  • A complex service / delivery model, where every project has its own challenges, and relies on people to deliver the service
  • A financial or operations background
  • Construction industry experience would be useful, however we are also interested in other complex industries, such as manufacturing or civil construction, where there are multiple sites and teams.
You will have examples of how you have created consistency in a nationally spread business, how you delivered strategic initiatives and projects, and the ways in which operational excellence is achieved. With technology changing the game, your ability to adapt and innovate will be valued.

As a company that values it's people, you will be someone who loves teamwork, puts others first, and treats the guys opening the gate the same as the directors. If a low-ego environment is your thing, this company is your place.

Why this role
This is a fantastic business to join, with rewarding work, a phenomenal culture and strong foundations to build upon. Most of all, this is a role that has scope to grow and where you can truly make a difference. You can make this role your own, contribute and implement ideas quickly, and you will be a key part of the leadership team. With no CEO in place, and other businesses in their group, there is room for progression.

Location
This head office and role is based in Wellington. However, for someone who is an exceptional fit for the role, we will consider Auckland based - but you will need to be in Wellington for a few days most weeks.
