Four most common interview questions

Interviews can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially for a role you are really excited about. With the right preparation, you can make a great first impression and leave the interview feeling as though you have put your best foot forward.

Keep reading to find out how to nail your answers to the four most common questions you will come across in every interview.

Question One: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

This question is always asked right at the start, as it is an opportunity for the interviewer to understand you better. Be prepared to answer this question by describing yourself in a few sentences. You may wish to mention previous work experience and how that relates to the role you are applying for, or how your most recent role relates to this new opportunity. Other areas you could mention include any key strengths you have or interests that are worth mentioning. Use this question as an opportunity to showcase your past work experience, as opposed to a deep dive into your personal life. Answers that nail this question tend to follow a ‘past, present, future’ format, where you talk about your previous experience, then your current role, and follow with your future goals.

Question Two: Why do you want to work for this company?

This is a good question! Why do you want to work for the company? You are going to spend most of your time at work so it needs to be for an organisation you will enjoy working for or a cause that you believe in. Research the company's values, mission statement and what they do to help inform you about whether you want to work for the company or not. If they align with your personal values, answer the question and tie in the research you have done to discuss how you believe you would be a good fit for their company.

Question Three: Where do you think you could add the most value to our team?

This question is a great opportunity to showcase your strengths! If you were the go-to person for problem-solving, include that in your answer. The key to answering this question is to tie in what you know about the company with your personal strengths and experience. For example, if the company you are applying for is fast-paced, highlight how you work well in a fast-paced environment based on your previous experience.

Question Four: Do you have any questions for us?

Everyone knows this question is coming yet you’d be surprised how few people have any questions. Stand out as a candidate and take this opportunity to ask all of your burning questions. You may want to ask questions about their company culture or gain insights into the day-to-day operations of the position.
